Kathipara Flyover Directions to use

Kathipara Flyover is open for public use. We had published the aerial view of the flyover, a.k.a grade separator in our earlier post on the above subject.

As grade separators are new to Chennaites, it is still not comfortable for many motor riders to effectively make use of this infrastructure. Click here to view the Kathipara flyover map with instructions to use from all directions.

Chennai International Airport - Information for Visitors

Visitors willing to wave-off their hands to their friends and relatives leaving abroad from Chennai International Airport are allowed to enter into the Airport visitors lounge in the departure area. The entry is restricted when there is any security alert triggered by the Government.

The visitors are required to buy tickets from the respective counter situated near the departure entry. The tickets are issued by the Airports Authority of India. Presently the ticket is sold for Rs.60/- to admit one person in to the lounge which is valid for two hours from the time of issue of the ticket. The ticket has to be retained by the visitor and required to be produced on demand by any Airport official.

This ticket entitles the holder to enter for legitimate purposes only for one occasion within terminal building, visitor concourse area except check-in, Arrival, Immigration, Tourist, Customs, Security - hold and operational areas. The ticket is not transferable, hence the holder who has bought the ticket has to use it for their own entry purposes only. The tickets once bought can not be returned back to the counter as it is not refundable. Children of age above three years would not be allowed entry without tickets.

Petrol Price cut in Chennai

In wake of falling crude oil price in the International markets, Govt. of India decided to reduce petrol and diesel prices in India by Rs.5.00 and Rs.2.00 per litre respectively. This is with effect from 00:00 hrs on 6th Dec 2008 (Midnight of 5th Dec).

While the premium petrol prices have been already reduced by petrol bunks in Chennai, after this announcement regular Petrol and Diesel are selling at 49.66 and 34.98 respectively.

It is stated by the authorities that it is only an interim measure, as the crude price faces high volatality in the markets. However the households are left with no news regarding LPG cylinder price. It is expected to get price cuts for LPG cylinders only in the next round of review of petroleum prices depending on the crude oil price movements in future.

Kathippara Flyover Aerial View

This is the aerial view of Kathippara Flyover coming up at Guindy in Chennai. This picture was shot from a flight that was flying low before landing at Chennai Airport, a week ago. A flight wing tail is visible on the top left corner of the pic.

The elevated path in the middle is the 100 feet road coming up and turning to the right towards airport on GST road. Presently this elevated path has been opened for traffic that has reduced a lot congestion in the Kathippara junction. Prior to this it was a nightmare to cross Kathippara junction from either side.

However the traffic flowing from Guindy on the GST road towards Ashok Nagar on the 100 feet road is not well connected as of now since the flyover construction is still being carried out. This traffic is taking an alternate path through St. Thomas mount to touch 100 feet road towards Ashok Nagar.

Kathippara Flyover constructon is expected to be complete by March 2009.

Padi - Villivakkam Junction Flyover

The current status of the flyover being built in the Padi - Villivakkam junction is as shown above. This flyover has entrance to elevate from Anna Nagar side and Redhills side, to go on top, take a round and get down on the other side. The entry and exit has two separate elevated paths leaving the road in between to accomodate high bandwidth. Traffic from Villivakkam and Ambattur would cross this junction under the bridge as understood from this architecture.

The pace of work carried out in this project is too slow to complete in the near future. The work is under progress for more than three years now..!

The fair will be held for two days at the Taj Connemara Hotel, Chennai during the weekend i.e., on Friday and Saturday, 13th and 14th June 2008. The event is sponsored by State Bank of India.

The fair will be inaugurated by the Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, Mr. N. Ram, who will witness the participation of education representatives from countries across the world. Premium institutes and consultants from the UK, Australia, the USA, Singapore, Dubai, New Zealand, Canada and the Philippines will set up stalls to inform students about career options available overseas. State Bank of India is also expected to set up a special stall on both days to inform students and parents about its various education loan schemes that can help finance education abroad.

Some of the popular institutions namely The University of Leeds (UK), the University of Warwick (UK), London Metropolitan University (UK), the University of Wollongong (Dubai), Dubai Aerospace Enterprise University (Dubai), Stansfield College (Singapore) are participating in this fair. Following are the areas of specialisation that students can look for in the fair - Engineering, medicine, design, media, management, arts and fashion, aquaculture and marine, tourism and hospital management.

Petroleum and Gas Price Hike in Chennai

Govt. of India announced the hike in petrol price on 4th June 2008, following the soaring price of crude oil in the international market. The hike announced has made the petrol and diesel costlier by Rs.5.00 and Rs.3.00 respectively. As usual many newspapers and politicians started debating the components of the petrol price and finally Central Govt. recommended the state governments to reduce the sales tax to reduce the burden on the common man.

The history of petrol price hike in Chennai shows an absolute increase of 77.36% in the last 6 years (Rs.31.05 in 2002 and 57.07 in 2008). The historic price data as available on the Indian Oil website gives the following information.

LPG cylinders used for cooking are also not spared. The price of cylinders are hiked by about Rs.50/- to cost Rs.339.60 in Chennai which is the lowest price tag among four metros, as it appears on the IOC website. In January 2004 it was Rs.248.55 which has seen a hike of 33.63% in the last 4 years.

It is too obvious for the world community that we should do away with petroleum products and and find ways to use alternate sources of energy and fuel to replace petroleum. But none of the nations give priority to this except for their ambitious talks during such price surge in international market. Developed nations should keep their nuclear agenda away and take the issue of replacing petroleum on top priority to invent a renewable source of energy.
